While most critics urge people to play less games, the creators behind Raise the Village, New Charity Era, want people to play even more social games. To make their goal more beneficial to society, they put a unique twist on the process of buying game-enhancing, virtual goods. In most social games, players purchase goods that typically help them achieve more. But, for the purchase of every virtual item that assists the villagers in the game, a real-world equivalent gets sent to the villagers in the Ugandan village the game is modeled after.

Another innovation is the game’s notification system. Besides the typical messages you’ll receive informing you it’s time to harvest crops to gain more points, players will also periodically receive photos, personal messages and blogs posts to keep them up to date with the village and show them that their contributions are making a difference. As the game grows, so does the real-world reach. The game designers hope to expand assistance to neighboring villages as more players engage with the game and purchase more virtual goods.
