Love Letters to the Future is cross platform experience designed to raise awareness about the rapidly expanding danger of global warming. It was funded by Greenpeace International and a group of NGO's as an online innovative game, buried artfully in a website that contained user generated letters about the future of our planet. Release Date november 09It started with a launch of a beautifully designed website calling for a tweet text/ image and video reflecting on the concerns and love to earth .
In the midst of this global initiative, the public stumbled upon mysterious messages and
symbols that hooked them onto an interactive narrative that played out across multiple
platforms. These messages created a trail of clues for the players to reveal the mystery behind
the strange disruptions, including the red Inkan emblem that led them to a visually stunning
portal – the convergent point where the players unlocked tantalizing fragments of what
appeared to be chronicles of the near future.
This compelling narrative turned the public into active participants as hundreds across the
globe collaborated to solve the mystery of the strange portal and its cryptic and haunting
glimpses of a nightmare future.
The players immersed themselves in this fascinating alternate reality game online for 16 days
and decoded 32 clues, which unlocked 8 videos of Maya’s transmission. The final transmission
was unlocked after four days of location based interactive scavenger hunt in 13 cities around
the world.
Players in Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Toronto, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Mumbai, Cork,
Washington DC and Buenos Aires, with the help of coordinates given to them at the end of
unlocking the 8th video found graffiti of Maya’s symbol with a phone number to call and get the
clue to unlock the last fragments of Maya’s message.
Players in Istanbul, Beijing, Rotterdam and Sao Paulo found virtual 3D graphical symbol of Maya
through the augmented reality application Layar at specific locations. The developers at
Triangle Studios (creators of Layar app) in Amsterdam created a special augmented reality layer
for the game for iPhone 3GS as well as Android supported mobile phones.
