AMD Foundation Changing The Game
Posted by Hsing Wei on 06-04-08There is reason to rethink the simple association of private sector interests and violent brain-drain games. This week, AMD Foundation announced the launch of AMD Changing The Game. The initiative is intended to improve critical technical and life skills by teaching kids to develop digital games with social content.
The foundation grants will go directly to nonprofit organizations that inspire young people to learn while creating social impact games. In the pilot year, pioneering organizations including Girlstart and Global Kids will be supported in expanding their work. Changing the Game is a natural fit for AMD, which features products powering the visual experience of two popular gaming consoles.
During the Fifth Annual Games for Change Festival (which AMD also supported), several game industry professionals raised the notion that there is a “market for meaning” and private sector desire for expanding the notion of games. Several of Games for Change’s partnership projects reflect that marriage of interests, like the Imagine Cup Challenge with Microsoft.
Perhaps the time is ripe to think creatively about increasing such mergers in the future.
