Athens Plaython: Playing Street Games in a Broken Economy
PARTICIPANTS: Chloe Varelidi
Plaython is a group that brings workshops and games played on the streets to the walls and squares of the city of Athens. In September 2012, Plaython hosted a festival with more than 1,500 people, infusing the often troubled Athenian streets with playfulness as a means to improve the everyday urban encounters. This talk will present the process and results of running a street games festival in a place like Athens, focusing on play as a form of activism. There will be discussion on how street games can be used to reclaim troubled public spaces as landscapes of possibility and community building.
