Understanding the Landscape: An Overview of Approaches, Platforms and Intended Outcomes for Teaching Youth Game Design

What is the pedagogy behind the use of game design for youth? One of the biggest challenges for educators new to this space is considering how to incorporate game design into the school curriculum and after-school programs.  What are these approaches, what are the potential expected outcomes, what level of skill or commitment is required on the part of the individual educator or school to consider their adoption? Speakers will outline a comprehensive overview of all platforms and methodologies and then provide a brief analysis of their experiences with specific tools and methodologies. Among the game-making tools discussed in the overview will be: Alice, Flash, Game Maker, The Games Factory 2, GameSalad, Gamestar Mechanic, GLOBALORIA, Kodu, Little Big Planet, Multimedia Fusion 2 and Scratch.
