9th Annual Games for Change Festival Call for Content

The 9th Annual Games for Change Festival will be taking place on June 18-20, 2012. The call for talks and presentations is now live! The Festival is the largest gaming event in New York City and the only event that facilitates the creation and distribution of social impact games that serve as critical tools in humanitarian and educational efforts.

Submission deadline: Friday, February 17 at 11:59 pm EST.

Accepted speakers will receive a complimentary pass to the Festival and will be notified on March 16.

For 2012, we’re looking for case studies, roundtables, lectures, and demos that touch upon the following topics…

Game Design for Social Impact
Best practices for balancing compelling and engaging game play with the need to drive and measure impact. When, where, and how to best incorporate content expertise into the design process.

Bridging the Gap
Presentations on what’s needed to bring the learning and impact already found in commercial games and AAA titles into the “games for change” community.

Partnerships and Collaborations
What creative and financial structures are being used to produce social impact games that effectively connect with their desired audiences (non-profit and for-profit).

Case Studies and Postmortems
Round table discussions that allow a closer look at specific elements of a project from its inception through game design and production, beta testing and evaluation to marketing and distribution.

Distribution and Publishing
What are some of the ways in which “games for change” are finding their way into the marketplace – from the education market to consumers? How can expertise within the commercial game industry be leveraged for social impact games?

Business Models and Financing
From Kickstarter and other crowd funding initiatives to public funding and even private equity, what are some of the ways in which “games for change” (broadly speaking) are identifying and securing new sources of financing? How is this changing their relationship with potential audiences?

Games for Learning
Research, evaluation, design – what is the latest in the field of games for learning?

Youth-Produced Games
We are looking for dynamic young adults (age 21 and under) who are passionate about designing games for social impact and interested in sharing their work with the Games for Change audience.

Games and Cultural Spaces
We are interested in sparking an international discussion around games in libraries and museums. What is the market potential of a network of such institutions for game developers and publishers? How can the various stakeholders best collaborate in order to create scalable models for distribution?

Review Process

Once your proposal has been submitted, we work with a sub-committee of our Advisory Board to review all submissions to ensure that the topics feel dynamic and relevant to where the field of games for change is today, and hopefully, where it is heading.
